What is myopia?

Myopia or short-sightedness is a condition which causes distant objects to appear blurred and near objects remain clear (the picture above demonstrates -1.00DS of myopia).

A short sighted eye focuses the rays of light entering your eye in front of the retina rather than on it. A myopic eye is predisposed or encouraged by external factors to increase in length therefore increasing myopia.

Myopia is the leading cause of vision loss throughout the world and its prevalence is increasing. The higher the level of myopia, the greater the risk of developing eye conditions in adulthood.

What is myopia management?

Up until recently Opticians would simply ensure that the glasses or contact lens prescription is up to date. The lenses gradually get thicker and stronger. Recent research has discovered that a specialist lens in glasses or contact lenses for children can help to reduce the progression of myopia.

This is completely groundbreaking.

What are the options?

All of our Optometrists are accredited to discuss myopia management and decide if it is an appropriate course. We can discuss whether contact lenses or glasses would be the best option. Simply give us a call and ask to get booked into to discuss myopia management options for your child.
